Brace for Maldini, but Parma win

Atalanta closed out the 2024-2025 Serie A Enilive season in third place with 74 points. Despite a brace from Maldini, Parma claimed a 3-2 victory at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo.

The match kicked off with both keepers springing into action early on: while Suzuki denied Maldini's cross-shot first, it was Bonny who managed to sting Carnesecchi's gloves for Parma instead. Then on 23 minutes, Balogh had his go, missing the target by inches from a Hernani free-kick. Bernabé went for a ranged shot, well parried by Carnesecchi, who had his work cut out once again in the 26th, when Sohm drew another key save out of the Nerazzurro keeper. Called to step up once again in just 60 seconds, the black-and-blue 29 flew to defuse Bonny's header. Atalanta's retaliation came in the 29th with Retegui, who had his twist-shot parried by a well-alert Suzuki. Eventually, the breakthrough came in the 32nd: gathering the ball following a great move from De Ketelaere, Bellanova sent it through for an on-rushing Maldini, who broke the deadlock with a feline first-touch pounce. But it was far from over for Atalanta's number 70, who completed his brace in 60 seconds flat with a right-footer curler off Retegui's lay-off. Despite Parma's attempt at retaliation in the 36th, Bonny finished high.

Although the visitors pulled one back straight after the resumption with Hainaut on 49 minutes, Atalanta retaliated right away, almost restoring the two-goal lead with Sulemana, who went a hair away from grazing the far post after a mazy solo run. In the 54th Parma almost levelled the score as a deflection off Pellegrino nearly crept in at the far post. Atalanta reared their head at the hour mark courtesy of a luscious Retegui-Lookman connection, eventually thwarted by Suzuki at the second attempt. The visitors levelled the score in the 71st with Ondrejka. On 77, Carnesecchi shut up shop to deny Pellegrino's point-blank effort. In the 89th, it was "Carnesecchi time" once again: Marco stood tall and dealt with Ondrejka in a mano-a-mano. The visitors turned the game around in the 91st minute as Ondrejka completed his brace and made it 3-2. Despite the sting in the tail, the mood was momentous nonetheless at the Gewiss Stadium as thw ehol Nerazzurro crowd huddled together to celebrate both the team's fifth Champions League qualification in the last seven year and to pay its most heartfelt farewell to captain Rafael Toloi.
