Lookman and Éderson vanquish Genoa: 2-0 win at the Gewiss Stadium
Both goals came in the second half
Matchday 9 of the 2023-2024 Serie A TIM saw the Nerazzurri defeat Genoa 2-0 at the Gewiss Stadium thanks to second-half goals from Lookman and Éderson.
Scamacca turned inside two minutes and got a shot away that Leali blocked at the second attempt. In the 16th minute, Genoa had a go with Ekuban, whose left-foot finish from the edge of the box went over the bar. Scamacca's 29th-minute angled drive was saved by Leali, who then fingertipped de Roon's ferocious volley from the edge of the box over the bar. On 38 minutes, Éderson's through ball found Lookman, whose angled drive forced a save out of Leali. Genoa threatened from a corner but Carnesecchi was well alert and managed to punch away Bani's header.
Gasperini threw Miranchuk on at the restart and the Nerazzurri got on the gas: in the 47th minute, it was Miranchuk himself who pulled back from the by-line for Scamacca, who tested Leali with a lovely back-heel flick. One minute later, Lookman set up Scalvini, whose header smacked against the post, and the Nigerian forward also gave it a whirl with a left-foot shot that was charged down by Leali. A long spell of pressure finally paid off in the 68th minute when the deadlock was broken by Lookman: Scamacca pulled back from the by-line, Lookman prodded into the net while on the ground to give Atalanta the lead. The goal was initially disallowed for a potential handball but it was then given via VAR after the referee reviewed it. The visitors reacted with a Malinovskyi shot that was wide and in the 77th minute Gudmundsson clipped the post. Carnesecchi rushed out in the 95th minute to deny Puscas and on the follow-up, Pašalić immediately sparked Atalanta's counter which resulted in Éderson doubling the Nerazzurri's lead by drilling into the net.
Come tomorrow, Monday 23 October, the team will get back to work with a morning training session behind closed doors at the Centro Bortolotti in preparation for the Austrian trip to Sturm Graz as part of matchday 3 of the UEFA Europa League.
