2020-2021 review: Joakim Mæhle

The season of the Nerazzurri number 3

The 2020-2021 season was the first in the Nerazzurri shirt for Joakim Mæhle. Arriving in January, the Danish wing-back was able to carve out an important space in the team: 25 games played in all competitions (20 in Serie A TIM, 2 in the UEFA Champions League, 3 in the Italian Cup) and 2 assists provided.

He made his debut just two days after his arrival in Bergamo in the match won 3-0 over Parma at the Gewiss Stadium. He started for the first time in his fourth appearance, in the 1-1 draw in Udine in the rearranged fixture of matchday 10. He assisted twice, both of them were in the league, on the occasion of two victories: the 2-0 win at Sampdoria and the 5-0 victory over Bologna in Bergamo. In the Champions League, he played both historic games against Real Madrid in the round of 16 as a starter.

Then the official statistics of the Lega Serie A about the league: 1.288 minutes played, 9.868 km run on average per game, 23 shots taken, 8 goalscoring chances created, 3 key passes, 32 recoveries made, 10 fouls suffered.

Satisfaction also came with the Denmark national team: not only he scored the goal in the 4-0 win against Austria in the World Cup qualifiers at the end of March, at the end of the season he was also called up for the European Championships, in which he found the back of the net in the 4-1 win over Russia that was decisive to go through.
