Zappa-goal-sta: the GOTM scrolls read 77 in March!

Coming in with number 77... Davide Zappagoalsta! Who better than the Nerazzurri wing-back to lead the uprising and drag the Goal of the Month down to new latitudes? After months spent under the thumb of the midfield-attacking ancien régime, it was Zappa, with a little help from behind the scenes (but not too behind) by Sead Kolašinac, to lit the fuse pulling off a proper coup de théâtre!

Together, Davide sand Sead, the brawn-brain duo behind this "March revolution", overthrew the old order and rewrote the GOTM manifesto. A bold reminder that, when it comes to this award, panache and flair are the only status quo.

No luck, then, for the restoration attempts by Marten de Roon (runner-up) and Nicolò Baldo (third)…

As per custom, climb up the standings and sift through the "exit polls" (in between brackets the "approval rate"):

4th place: Dominic Vavassori, Atalanta U23s 4-1 Feralpisalò, 2024/25 giornata Serie C NOW MD32

We begin our climb with the fourth spot, awarded this month to U23s vice-top scorer Dominic Vavassori, whose goal isn’t just a perfect showcase of all the qualities that make the No. 11 a standout for coach Francesco Modesto, but also the crowning touch on the Nerazzurri’s “Caravaggio” (yes, pun intended) masterpiece at the Municipal stadium. Gyabuaa's pass raches Ceresoli, who, with a cheeky sole flick, sets up a rampant Cassa. Give-and-go with Vavassori and a mazy run towards the box slicing through the defense before coming full circle with Vava who, after wriggling between two Gardesani defenders, pulls off a chapéu (a perfect little lob, in homage to his Brazilian roots), curling the ball with his right foot over the keeper, Rinaldi, who’s left stranded. A delicious piece of skill that earns him a well-deserved wooden spoon!

3rd place: Nicolò Baldo, Atalanta 4-0 Monza, 2024-2025 Primavera 1 MD31 “Trofeo Giacinto Facchetti

From one "poker" to another, the common thread running through this month’s podium, from one “third goal of the match” to the next, and from one youngster to another, here we 've reached the podium! Bronze medal goes to Nicolò Baldo, snatching a podium finish in march at his first-ever GOTM nomination with his goal against Monza. We're 13 minutes into the second half when Simonetto steps up for a throw-in, a rather unhortodox spot to grab an assist, but the Primavera's 23 adds one more to his belt and largely thanks to a moment of solo brilliance form his teammate Baldo! Chesting the ball down, coach Bosi's 21 knocks it ahead with a self-pass. Taking a doubbe bounce, that clever catches the Monza defenders flat-footed opening up a gap right through the heart of the backline. And it’s right there where Baldo arrows his first-time right-footed rocket, a leaving the Bagaj keeper cluthcing at thin air...

Three in a row for Atalanta: extending their streak with a dazzling stroll over Monza on MD31, the Nerazzurri walk out the Centro Bortolotti with a 4-0 win in the bag.

Runner-up: Marten de Roon, Juventus 0-4 Atalanta, 2024/25 Serie A Enilive MD28

Silver medal goes to the tireless Marten, who clinched second place in the March roundup with a goal that was the bolt from the blue, opening the floodgates for the Nerazzurri’s stunning triumph, all in true de Roon style, from start to finish: after snatching Kelly's pass, our number 15 immediately lays it off to Ederson to spark the Atalanta counter. Lookman charges forward, cuts inside, and unleashes a shot that Di Gregorio is quick to parry. The ball falls into a scramble in the box, and as it bounces around, entering the "MdR Zone". Target locked, shot loaded and missile fired from the penalty spot: and with a moving spot-kick of sorts, Marten curls the ball across the goal and into the far top corner, ushering in the second half in the best way possible: a true knuckleball (or zambonazo, for the connoisseurs), rocketing under the roof of the net . What comes next? A classic Marten de Roon celebration!

Winner: Davide Zappacosta, Juventus 0-4 Atalanta, 2024/25 Serie A Enilive MD28

After securing bronze in last week’s POTM Lete and taking third place in February’s Royal Rumble, the Nerazzurri wing-back has finally earned his first major recognition of the season… A well-deserved award that, much like his match-winning strike in March, feels like a “double whammy”. Zappacosta’s tango with the net begins early, in the 8th minute, when his effort just skims past the far post, and continues into injury time with a first-time volley that Di Gregorio scrambles to parry for a corner. But, as the saying goes, third time’s the charm and at the 65th minute, Davide’s luck finally turns... It starts with Kolašinac, and the two link up brilliantly inside the Juve box. A cheeky backheel from the Bosnian sets up Zappacosta, who opens up and unleashes an uppercut of a shot that curls into the far top corner to make it 3-0. A goal that seals the deal and snags gold for March. As we said, this is the cherry on top of an already “monster” individual performance in a team “partitone” (de Roon's words...)
