Way to go(al), Retegui! 7 goals for 7 matchdays
He scored his first nerazzurro hat-trick against Genoa
"Seven goals for Seven matches". In case you're wondering, we're not teasing any footballing reboot of the 1954 blockbuster (not yet, at least): the title nods at Mateo Retegui's outstanding league start. With his hat-trick scored in the match against Genoa, Atalanta's number 32 has now reached a scoring tally of 7, thus waylaying Marcus Thuram on the top of the topscorers' standing.
As a further plus, not only did his first black-and-blue hat-trick (namely, a right-footed full-stretch, a tap-in with the left and a penalty) earn Mateo the match's ball, signed by the whole team as custom requires, but he also claimed the Player of the Match award in a single smooth sweep.
Since the advent of the three-points-per-win era, no other Italian player has scored more than Retegui after 7 league appearances for the black-and-blue Club (at the moment, El Chapita is levelled with four other footballers). During the course of Atalanta's history, only Karl Hansen did better than Mateo (on par with Beppe Savoldi also with 7), scoring 9 goals after 7 competitive weeks in the 1949/50 season. Shortening the scope to overall appearances, only Luis Muriel can flaunt better figures (8 nets scored in 7 matches).
From Lecce to Genoa, Retegui's 7 wonders (so far)
