U23s, Francesco Modesto: "A coming-of-age performance"
The coach's post-match debriefing
In commenting on the comeback win over AlbinoLeffe that secured a spot in the National Playoffs, Francesco Modesto stressed how: "It wasn't cracked up to be an easy game, AlbinoLeffe had an outstanding campaign and they were very well-coached and I wish to convey my acknowledgement to them. At the start of the match, we found ourselves a bit restrained. I chose to start Pounga because, compared to the likes of De Nipoti, he brings a different set of skills to the table. In the second half, on the other hand, the team definitely showed its better half, and foremost, a relentless drive to bring home the result. Although we could have scored earlier, the team worked themselves up and bent over backwards so much that they pushed themselves to the edge of their fatigue limits and beyond. I'm most chuffed with this outcome, especially for the Club altogether, which has been backing up this project for two years. Each of our players is truly one-of-a-kind in their own right, and they know exactly where their goal lies. I'm grateful to everyone who's been standing by us all along: Gatti, Marta, the whole staff. Reaching the National stage is a well-deserved milestone, especially considering all the work carried out behind the scenes".
Moving on to the question about the next round: "A tie split on two legs is a different story entirely, for better and worse: it gives you more room for turnover, playing your tactics according to each one's different roles and qualities. Having a more attacking-minded outlook, our style is based on always playing and showcasing the skills of every player available. We’re not fond of defending; we prefer to do it by pressing forward. With an average of 20.3 years, we have a very young roster on our hands, with each player flaunting a unique set of skills and abilities. I'm honoured to coach them, help them grow and see them improve with each passing day. That's my greatest source of pride ever since I've been here".
In his closing remarks, the Nerazzurri coach wished to acknowledge the fans' support: "They have been amazing, and we thank them for their support. I'm grateful to every single fan who has spurred us on throughout the season".
