This is… SuperMario! To celebrate Mario Pašalić’s 300 appearances in the Nerazzurri shirt, the cinematic reference to Zack Snyder’s work feels almost inevitable (after all, from Sparta to Split, it’s just a hop away…). When reflecting on Mario’s milestone, it’s impossible not to highlight the dual journey that links the number 8 (or 88, depending on how far back you want to go) with the brightest chapters of Atalanta’s saga, both in Italy and Europe. These moments have become an integral part not only of the Club’s history but, above all, of its emotional memory. A story still being written, game after game.
It’s no coincidence that this double thread tying Mario’s personal journey to Atalanta’s began in Haifa, in that early taste of the Europa League which, a few years later, with Mario as one of the club’s key players, the team would lift to the sky.
Nor is it a coincidence how it all kicked off: a goal on a midweek night. A pattern that over time has made him more than just a lucky charm. From talisman to “talisMario,” thanks to an uncanny knack for stepping up as Atalanta’s “king (or rather, wild card) of the cups.” From Haifa to San Siro, where he helped secure Atalanta’s historic first point in the Champions League in a frantic draw against the Citizens. Then the crucial second goal against Shakhtar in the win that sealed the club’s maiden qualification to the Round of 16; the opening goal in the sliding door moment at the Da Luz; the clincher at the “Theatre of Dreams” in Manchester; the strike at Anfield, a true statement of Nerazzurri intent on the march to Dublin; all the way to the equalizer at the Lluis Companys in the latest Champions League campaign.
Rounding off the picture are other true milestones in Mario’s story: his 100th appearance (in Naples), 200th (at San Siro, once again with a goal), the celebrations at the Aviva Stadium, and last but not least, the 300th game in Parma, where he once again left his mark with another trademark Pašalić strike. Not to mention his first caps as captain, both in Italy and Europe: an appointment formal, yet entirely fitting, for a Mario whose weight -both on and off the pitch- needs no introduction.
