Bergamo Stadium Stages Italy’s 2-0 Victory over Northern Ireland
Zalewski's Poland and Hien's Sweden also to face off for a World Cup spot on March 31
Fifteen Atalanta first-team players have been called up to their respective National teams. Some will feature in friendly matches, while others will compete in playoff fixtures for qualification to the upcoming World Cup or, in the case of the Under-21s, in European Championship qualifiers.
At a sold-out Stadio di Bergamo, Italy secured a 2-0 win over Northern Ireland. Giacomo Raspadori came on in the 88th minute, while Marco Carnesecchi and Giorgio Scalvini remained on the bench. Gianluca Scamacca was not included in the matchday squad instead.
Also in action in the World Cup playoffs on Thursday 26 March was Sead Kolašinac with Bosnia and Herzegovina, who overcame Wales 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw following extra time. Kolašinac featured for the opening 62 minutes.
Finally, Hien’s Sweden also booked their place in the other playoff final with a 3-1 win over Ukraine in Vila-real, with the Atalanta defender featuring for the opening 37 minutes. Meanwhile, it was Zalewski’s Poland who came out on top 2-1 against Djimsiti’s Albania: the Albanian centre-back captained the Kuq e Zinjtë for the full 90 minutes, while the Polish wing-back was not included in the matchday squad.
With the final World Cup spots on the line, it will be an “Atalanta international derby” all over again in both ties scheduled for March 31: Italy and Bosnia and Herzegovina will meet in Zanica, while Sweden and Poland are set to clash in Solna.
Also in action was Italy U21, featuring Honest Ahanor, in the qualifiers for the upcoming European Championship: the Azzurrini recorded a 4-0 win over North Macedonia. For Ahanor, who did not feature, it marked his first call-up to the national team.
