Empoli v Atalanta: the stats of the game
From the 7th clean sheet to de Roon's 250th Serie A cap
By not conceding a single goal in the Empoli road game, Atalanta claimed their 7th clean sheet in the 10 Serie A matches played so far, establishing a new best for the Club in regards to such a specific match-span. The Bergamo City Edition, Atalanta's 2023/24 Third Kit, surely passed its first test with flying colour(s)!
Thanks to his second consecutive brace for Atalanta after the two goals scored on Matchday 3 in the home win over Monza (oddly enough, another 3-0 victory), Gianluca Scamacca undoubtedly hogged the limelight in Empoli. As a side note, Atalanta's number 90 also hit the woodwork twice (namely the bar and the post) and provided Koopmeiners with the assist.
As highlighted by the "Opta Facts" package by Stats Perform, Scamacca is one of the three Serie A players to have scored more than a single goal haul - being Lautaro Martínez (with three) and Olivier Giroud (with two) the other "mystery players". Plus, he is also the fastest of the three having scored his two braces within just seven appearances.
Moreover, on the grounds of his four goals in just 3 Serie A appearances against Empoli, the Tuscanian team is not only Scamacca’s preferred victim of choice in the Italian top flight; but also the one against which he has celebrated 2+ goals in a single match.
Moving on to the other scorer of the night, Teun Koopmeiners is one out of the only three midfielders to have favoured at least five goals in the last 3 Serie A seasons –being the other two Giacomo Bonaventura and Felipe Anderson.
Having reached his 250th Serie A appearance with Atalanta, all of them being made donning the black-and-blue shirt, the Empoli match converted Marten de Roon into the most-capped Atalanta foreign player. As far as the all-time standing is concerned,* Marten is third overall, with only Stefano Angeleri (281 caps) and Gianpaolo Bellini (279 appearances + the two play-offs against Reggina) ahead of him. And no better way to celebrate such a momentous milestone: with a victory where not only did he don the captain's armband, but he also provided Scamacca with the assist, his fourth thus far in the league, for the third goal of the game.
