Atalanta v Fiorentina: the brainteaser

Three trivia on our Serie A 2024/25 MD4 game

After three away games in a row and the first international break of the season, it is high time to return to the Gewiss Stadium! For their seasonal debut at the Gewiss Stadium, the Nerazzurri welcome Palladino's Fiorentina on Sunday afternoon...

How many games make up our longest domestic unbeaten streak v Fiorentina?

Out of the 71 encounters between Atalanta and Fiorentina contended thus far in Bergamo, the Nerazzurri's wins amount to 25 (as opposed to the 27 draws and 19 victories from the Tuscany side). As a further trivia, the hosts' win usually coincides with the opening of quite lengthy and unabridged unbeaten streaks… Coming to the crunch, would you care to guess the size of our record run?

Historically, our first (and oddly enough our best too) unbeaten run lasted from the the 1930/31 Serie B campaign (a 0-0 goalless draw) to the 3-2 win in the 1950/51 Serie A MD32. To put it in figures, the count stopped at 10 consecutive home games.

By going backwards in decreasing order, the list comprises: the 9 encounters (8 in the Italian top flight, 1 in the National Cup) between the 1996/97 and 2007/08 seasons, the 8-games streak (7 in the Serie A and 1 Coppa Italia clash) across the 1971/72 and the 1986/87 campaigns, and the 6 clashes between 2016/2017 and 2020/21.

How many goals did Robin Gosens score against Fiorentina?

Upon joining the Nerazzurri in the 2017 summer transfer window, former Atalanta player and current Fiorentina wingback Robin Gosens bucked up and down the left flank for 157 games during his four-and-a-half seasons in Bergamo. During his stay in the Orobic town, Robin also made a name for himself thanks to his renowned offensive knack, bringing out time and again his proclivity as both a wingman (to deliver 21 key passes in all competitions, 18 in the Serie A alone) and foremost as a surefire added scorer. Out of his 25 markings (29 in total) in the Serie A, how many were scored against Fiorentina?

Thanks to the 2 nets (and 1 assist) bagged in 13 encounters, the Tuscanian side hogs a pretty high spot on Robin's list, bested only by: Sassuolo (4 goals and 1 key pass in 10 games); the Lazio-Torino duo (on par with 3 nets each in, respectively, 9 and 11 games without overlooking the two assists provided against the capitol side) and then Napoli (2 goals and 1 key pass in 15 games)...

Closing off with the "When?" and "Where?" of his two nets against the purple side, while his first one (namely, a 59-minute header) was bagged to close the black-and-blue comeback in the 2018/19 Serie A MD26, Robin gave wings to our 3-0 home win by opening the scoring with a left-footed paw on 44 minutes back in the 2020/21 campaign (MD11).

2023-2024 Coppa Italia, Atalanta v Fiorentina: when did Pašalić bag the 4-1 goal?

Called to turn around the 1-0 defeat suffered at the Franchi stadium in the first leg through a do-or-die return match on April 23, Atalanta took the lead in the 8th with Koopmeiners and doubled it 5 minutes later with a trademark stunner by Scamacca to retaliate the visitors' first attempts. Unfortunately, the striker had to see his celebrations cut short (or rather postponed to a later date) after his goal was ruled out by VAR due to an alleged foul in the build-up. On 30 minutes, it was De Ketelaere who almost found the second of the night, nearing the post by inches with a ranged left-footed finish.

Despite a more boisterous second-half start from the Nerazzurri, who ended up one man up following the red card waved to Milenkovic and missing the 2-0 goal by inches in the 49th as Ruggeri couldn't finalise a point-blank chance, the visitors levelled (temporarily turning the tie around) with Martinez Quarta in the 68th. 7 minutes were all it took Atalanta to level everything once again, though: taming a left-flanked cross, De Keteleaere nodded the ball down to Scamacca, who fired another trademark golazo with a bicycle kick. Well into injury time it fell to the Scamacca-Lookman duo to bust the ghosts of extra time: by cleaving the key pass from the then black-and-blue 90 first, the Nigerian striker punched the ticket to the Olimpico Stadium final. If palpitations weren't enough already, VAR had once again its say in making seconds last longer than hours: after a seemingly endless review, the referee eventually validated, for real this time, the goal that sealed the black-and-blue comeback. It's not over yet, though: the final scoresheet, and our question as well, says 4-1 isn't it? And so it was, as SuperMario stated "game, set and match" for Atalanta with a gentle lob to convert our number 11's assist and vanquish the violet keeper. What about the time you said? 98th minutes (97'.55'' to be exact)...
