Focusing on Serie A, Atalanta have won four of the five previous September meetings, with no draws against the Rossoblù: the two 2-1 wins in 1990 and 1992 were followed by a 1-0 victory in 2008 and a 2-0 success in 2023. The only result preventing a clean sweep was the 1-0 defeat in 2018.

September has also smiled on the Nerazzurri in the Coppa Italia, with a 1-0 win in 1973 and a 2-1 victory in 1994 in the other two meetings played in Bergamo during the month. That takes Atalanta’s overall record to six wins from seven, with Saturday’s clash set to become the eighth September meeting between Atalanta and Cagliari in history.

A topscorer from yesteryear in Bergamo

When it comes to Nerazzurri goals in Atalanta v Cagliari fixtures played in Bergamo, Domenico Morfeo remains the man to beat. The playmaker scored four times against the Rossoblù across Serie A and the Coppa Italia, all within the space of just over a year. And when considering the fixture overall, home and away, only Gianluca Scamacca and Gigi Riva have scored more.

Morfeo opened his account in the 4-2 Coppa Italia win in December 1995, before finding the net again just a few months later in the 3-0 league victory in April 1996.

He completed his four-goal haul on 26 January 1997, scoring twice in the 4-1 win at the then Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia: he struck the opener before converting the penalty for 3-1 in the second half. Atalanta v Cagliari in Bergamo has often been synonymous with goals. The record dates all the way back to their first meeting in Bergamo, a 6-4 thriller on 27 March 1932, which remains the highest-scoring Atalanta v Cagliari fixture to this day.

And among all those goals, there have been some truly spectacular ones. On 1 February 2015, with the score locked at 1-1 and the clock ticking into the 94th minute, Mauricio Pinilla produced a stunning bicycle kick to seal a 2-1 win and earn Atalanta three precious points in their battle for Serie A survival.

And that moment of magic would prove to be just the beginning: the bicycle kick against Cagliari was the first in a series that became something of a trademark for the Chilean in Nerazzurri colours. In 2015 alone, the then No. 51 would repeat the feat against Torino, Cesena and Sassuolo.
