The game got off to a tough start for the Nerazzurri as Cissé was shown a red card in the 9th minute for an alleged off-the-ball foul on a Salernitana defender. Despite being outnumber, Atalanta U23s desplayed resilience and fortitude, weathering the visitors' attacks. Vismara came to the for again in the 61st minute with an oustanding save to keep the Nerazzurri in the game, but Atalanta U23s' uphill battle became even steeper in the 77th, when Bonanomi was shown a red card for a foul, leaving the hosts down to nine men.
