2025/26 UCL opposition focus: Borussia Dortmund
Play-off first leg in Germany on Tuesday
Borussia Dortmund will be Atalanta’s opponents in the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League play-offs, with the first leg set to take place on Tuesday 17 February at 21:00 CET at the Westfalenstadion in Dortmund, before the return fixture on Wednesday 25 February at 18:45 CET at the Stadio di Bergamo.
This will not be the first time the two sides have crossed paths in European competition, having previously faced each other in the 2017/18 UEFA Europa League Knockout RO32.
Founded in 1909 in the city of Dortmund, Ballspielverein Borussia 09 Dortmund – better known as Borussia Dortmund or simply BVB – are one of the heavyweights of German football. Ever-presents in the Bundesliga, Die Schwarzgelben boast a rich trophy cabinet comprising eight German league titles, five DFB-Pokals, six German Super Cups, a UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, an Intercontinental Cup and the 1996/97 UEFA Champions League title.
The Ruhr club have been led by Croatian coach Niko Kovač since January 2025.
In their most recent Bundesliga fixture, BVB came away with a 4-0 home win over 1. FSV Mainz 05. After 22 matches, they sit second in the league table on 51 points. As for their UEFA Champions League campaign thus far, Die Borussen wrapped up the League Phase in 17th place, finishing on 11 points.
