UCL: Thursday night v Arsenal at the Gewiss Stadium
It will be our historic first with the London team in European competitions
With English side Arsenal stopping off in Bergamo on Thursday, September 19, at 21:00 CEST to usher in the 2024-2025 UEFA Champions League campaign, the League Phase MD1 will also mark a historic first encounter between the two sides in European competitions.
One of the longest present London teams in the Premier League championship, Arsenal are also one of the the most successful teams in the English top division: thus far, the Gunners have in fact lifted 13 leagues, 14 FA Cup titles, 2 League Cup laurels and 17 Community Shields. Moving on to International competitions, the Club can also flaunt a Cup Winners' Cup and one Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.
The team is coached by Mikel Arteta, who, after his long tenure donning Arsenal's colours on the pitch, has been appointed as caretaker back in December 2019. With the Basque coach at the helm, the North London side has lifted an FA Cup in the 2019-2020 campaign and 2 Community Shields (in the 2020 and 2023 campaigns respectively).
Opening up the 2024/25 Premier League season with one draw and 3 wins (with the latest being last Sunday in the London Derby against Tottenham), Arsenal are currently 2nd on 10 points, placed behind Manchester City. As a further trivia about the upcoming UCL game, should Raheem Sterling hit the Gewiss Stadium pitch on Thursday night, the Three Lions striker would become the first player to feature in the Champions League with four different English sides: namely, Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea (By Opta – Stats Perform).
