The two sides started off the game on equal footing with neither getting the upper hand at the Tonino D'Angelo. On 8 minutes, Vavassori found the back of the net following a textbook overlapping to convert Cassa's assits, but the goal was disallowed due to a previous offside. The Nerazzurri broke the deadlock in the 44th, with Comi rising highest to nod Ghislandi's cross. Right before the break, Vavassori went close again: after snatching the ball, Atalanta's number 99 burst through on goal, only to be deflected out for a corner by the opposing keeper.

The second half got off to an uphill start for the Nerazzurri. In the 47th minute, Grande capitalized on a defensive mix-up and break through one-on-one with Vismara, slotting home the equaliser. Atalanta U23s responded in the 53rd minute through Cassa, whose effort from inside the box was deflected by the Altamura defence; the loose ball then fell to Bergonzi, but his follow-up shot sailed over the bar. The clearest chance of the second half fell to Levak, who capitalised on a forward touch by Misitano inside the area but was unable to hit the target.
