Retegui is the Player of the Month for August!

Crowned by the Nerazzurri fans on the official Atalanta App

"A la primera va la vencida" (first time's the charm) for Mateo Retegui! Thanks to his 3 goals in as many matches, the Italian-Argentinian striker has outpaced his fierce competitors and etched his name first in the 2024/25 POTM Yearbook by winning over the Nerazzurri fans, who handed Mateo the award without a second thought after voting him en masse on the Atalanta app...

And what better way to usher in the new POTM era than the two Capital D debutants sharing the highest steps of the podium?

As it should be, we couldn't help but start with Mateo Retegui. After making his absolute debut as a Nerazzurro with a substitute appearance in the Warsaw night, the striker native of San Fernando spared no time and capitalized on the next available chance to flaunt all his killer instinct, starting off with the brace in the Serie A debut against Lecce and making things even clearer with his second back-to-back cabezazo, namely that gavce Atalanta the temporary lead in Turin. By bringing to bear all his qualities, both inside and outside the box, the current Atalanta topscorer has built up his Player of the Month candidacy one goal and one breakage of the opponents' defensive lines at the time before putting it forward to the Nerazzurri fans, who had no second thought and wrote 32 on the ballots for August's MVP.

The silver medal went to the other MD1 protagonist: we are of course talking about Marco Brescianini! Just like his "brace buddy", Atalanta's 44 couldn't ask for a better debut: by taking turns with Mateo on the scoresheet, Marco started the black-and-blue goal galore and then put the game on ice making it 3-0 for the Orobic side. As a further proof of his leg up, the MVP of the Via del Mare game followed up on his monstre Week 1 performance and racked up two consecutive starting XI features in Turin and San Siro, thus ticking all the right boxes to become a standing stone in Atalanta's midfield throughout the season start; coast-to-coasting from the defensive line to the offensive third.

Still, the POTM isn't just an award to major individual performances but also an acknowledgement to consistency, perseverance and selflessnes for the team. And which better representative to all three than the "evergreen" Marten De Roon, third in the month's standings? As customary in his 9-season tenure, the black-and-blue captain stayed true to his recipe for success, providing quality and substantial performances both across the midfield line, his natural habitat, and as a fall-back defender, a role he has taken like a duck to water after dabbling with it last season. The result? A flawless playing-time sweep ( accruing 100% of available minutes), all clocked in in full MdR style.

Relive the black-and-blue perfect storm by Brescianini and Retegui with the highlights of Lecce v Atalanta...

A night to remember for both Marco Brescianini, who bagged a brace in his very own Atalanta debut, and Mateo Retegui, who also struck twice in his first Serie A game with the black-and-blue shirt. Here are the highlights of our 0-4 league flag-off at the Via del Mare.

Enhorabuena Mateo for his first Player of the Month award! As for you, dear Atalanta fans, keep the smartphones handy and the app always on... See you in a month!
