A cagey first half in Monopoli, with both sides staying compact at the back and giving little away in terms of clear chances. Atalanta's best early opportunity came in the 14th minute: after Simonetto's effort was parried, Levak pounced on the rebound just a few yards out but but lifted his shot over the bar. Three minutes later, Vavassori had a go -beating a Monopoli defender off the dribble before unleashing a left-footer that sailed high over the crossbar.

The game burst into life after the break when Viterritti was sent off in the 47th for pulling down Vavassori as he broke clean through goal. Despite going one man dow, it was Monopoli who drew first nlood in the 55th as Fall converted from the spot after a handball by Panada. Atalanta didn't go down swining and found the equalizer on 64 minutes with Vomi turning in Berto's knockdown from a set piece. Late on, Cissè came close with a powerful effort from the left that was beaten away, while Monopoli nearly snatched it in the 86th minute when Imputato rattled the post.
