Milan v Atalanta: pre-match notes
Stories and trivia ahead of our trip to San Siro
From the New Balance Arena to San Siro, with barely time to catch breath. After the home double-header against Venezia and Pafos, Atalanta hit the road again on Sunday 18 October for their third fixture in the space of seven days. At 18:00 CEST, the Nerazzurri will take on Milan at the Meazza on Matchday 7 of the 2026/27 Serie A Enilive season, the first of two consecutive games away from Bergamo before their European trip to Amsterdam to face Ajax.
Before shifting the coordinates back towards Europe, however, there is still league business to attend to. Ahead of kick-off, let’s delve into the stories, stats and head-to-head record behind Milan v Atalanta.
A San Siro double take
Five months and eight days, 161 days in all: that is all that will separate Atalanta’s two away meetings with Milan in 2026. On 18 October, the Nerazzurri will return to the Meazza after last visiting on 10 May, when goals from Éderson, Zappacosta and Raspadori sealed a 3-2 win.
Two Milan v Atalanta fixtures in the same calendar year, spanning two different seasons, is a script that has not played out for exactly 40 years. In 1986, the first meeting came on 27 April, on the final matchday of the 1985/86 Serie A season, before the sides crossed paths again on 28 September, on Matchday 3 of the following campaign: just 154 days separated the two games. And there was one name on the scoresheet in both: Giancarlo Cantarutti, who found the net in both April’s 1-1 draw and September’s 2-1 win.
A dominant Atalanta side stormed to a 0-3 lead at San Siro against Milan thanks to goals from MVP Éderson, Zappacosta and Raspadori. Late on, Milan pulled two back through Pavlović and Nkunku from the penalty spot, but Atalanta held firm to claim a huge win at San Siro.
Milan high on the away-day charts
Fourteen wins and a place near the top of Atalanta’s away-day charts. Among the teams in the current 2026/27 Serie A line-up, only Lazio have been beaten more often by the Nerazzurri on their own turf, with 16 away wins. Milan sit joint-second alongside Genoa among the opponents Atalanta have defeated most often away from Bergamo.
That record has gathered particular momentum over the past decade. In their 11 competitive visits to Milan since December 2016, the Nerazzurri have come away with five wins and four draws, leaving empty-handed on just two occasions.
Four trips on a roll
Four trips, three wins and one draw: that is Atalanta’s record from their last four competitive visits to Milan. The run began in January 2024 with victory in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals and has continued uninterrupted through the following three Serie A meetings.
To find a longer streak, the clock has to be turned back to the period between December 2016 and January 2021, when the Nerazzurri went five consecutive competitive away games against Milan unbeaten. Three wins and two draws, capped off by the emphatic 3-0 victory on 23 January 2021, a scoreline that matched Atalanta’s first-ever win away to the Rossoneri. On 16 March 1941, the Nerazzurri also ran out 3-0 winners at San Siro, courtesy of goals from Ciancamerla, Gaddoni and Fabbri.
