Mateo Retegui: another (ner)Azzurro in Bergamo!
The 25-year-old Italian international join Atalanta from Genoa
Atalanta BC are glad to announce the permanent signing of 25-year-old Italian international Mateo Retegui, landing in Bergamo from Genoa CFC.
Born in San Fernando, Argentina, on April 29, 1999, and of Italian citizenship through descent, Retegui took his first steps in the Academies of River Plate first and then Boca Juniors, thus making his Senior debut with the Xeneizes' First Team in November 2018.
He then earned his stripes in his homeland with loan spells at Estudiantes, Talleresand then Club Atletico Tigre, where he scored 35 goals in 70 games between 2022 and 2023 and lifted the league's top scorers' trophy thanks to the 19 nets bagged in 27 appearances in his first season.
In his move to Europe, Mateo swapped Tigre's red-and-blue shirt with Genoa's, joining the Ligurian Club in the summer of 2023 on a permanent transfer. Barely a wink after treading the Italian soil, he already left his mark with a brace in his first-ever match (namely the Coppa Italia tie against Modena) before seizing the Olimpico Stadium with a headed decider in the MD2 win over Lazio. He then closed his first season with 9 goals (and 3 assists) to his name in his 31 appearances across the Serie A and the Coppa Italia.
Preceding his move to Genoa by a couple of months, Mateo, aged 23 at the time, received his International call-up by Italy's National team on March 17 2023. He then went on to make his debut on the 23rd of March, a scoring one nonetheless, in the Euro 2024 qualifier against England.
Back-to-back on the scoresheet, he found his scoring ways in the game against Malta, namely his very second cap. He then bagged a brace in the friendly against Venezuela played back in the March International break. Called up by Italy for Euro 2024, he closed the Continental pageant with four games. On aggregate, Retegui's tally with the Azzurri's shirt adds up to 12 caps and four goals.
The Percassi and Pagliuca families and the whole Club would like to extend a warm welcome to Mateo Retegui and wish him the best of luck in his future personal and team endeavours as a Nerazzurro.
