It feels like just yesterday, when, on August 4 2022, Ademola Lookman made his debut in front of the cameras in Zingonia for his official Atalanta unveiling. With his unmistakable Cockney accent and the composed confidence that would have later on become his trademark, he confidently said: “I’m an explosive player who likes to make things happen, and I hope to win as much as possible with the team.”
100 games later, all showcasing his knack for being both the Dr. Jekyll of Atalanta's tactics and the Mr. Hyde of any opposing defender, we can safely say that Lookman has "made things happen": from his Serie A debuts in the 2022/23 season against Sampdoria and Spezia (when he hit the ground running with goals on both occasions), to his show-stopping solo performances on the European stages (first in the Europa League, at home against Sporting CP, and then in the Champions League, away against Shakhtar). And, of course, let’s not forget our no.11's pièce de résistance… The Aviva Stadium night on May 22, when Mola spearheaded the Orobic triumph and dealt a technical knockout to the 'invincibles' of Bayer Leverkusen with his hat trick, turning the skies over Dublin black and blue!
And "things did (indeed) happen", not just at Atalanta but for Lookman as well: MVP of the Europa League final, 14th in the overall Ballon d'Or ranking, and, as the icing on the cake of a standout season, named African Player of the Year. He chose to share this incredible achievement on December 22 with a Gewiss Stadium in full swing, welcoming its star with open arms and a Nerazzurri carpet.
