02/06/1963: the 60th anniversary of our Coppa Italia victory

Remembering the historical feat

On the 2nd of June 1963, 11 heroes donning the black-and-blue colours carved their names in the history books with a legendary feat. That Sunday at the Meazza stadium will be forever remembered for Angelo Domenghini's hattrick against  Torino and for Piero Gardoni rising the Coppa Italia to the sky as their endeavour brought invaluable joy to Bergamo and its people during otherwise frantic days of trepidation and fear due to the impairing health conditions of  Pope John XXIII - with the pontifex native of Bergamo bound to pass a few hours later.

Sixty years later, fond memories and the lasting legacy of such a momentous feat are still being preciously cherished within the hearts and minds of the whole Atalanta fanbase. Pier Luigi Pizzaballa, Alfredo Pesenti, Franco Nodari, Giorgio Veneri, Piero Gardoni, Umberto Colombo, Angelo Domenghini, Flemming Nielsen, Salvatore Calvanese, Mario Mereghetti, Luciano Magistrelli: they were the line-up and subs deployed in the final by Paolo Tabanelli, Atalanta's coach. At that time Senator Daniele Turani was the appointed President of the Orobic Club, wisely assisted by his right-hand man and confidant, the engineer Luigi Tentorio, the mastermind behind the drafting of a winning team.

As Atalanta imposed themselves over the likes of Como (defeated 4-2 after extra time); Catania (2-1); Padova (2-0) and Bari (1-0) on the road to the final, the triumphant black-and-blue cavalcade eventually culminated with the memorable 3-1 victory in the grand final against Torino with Domenghini awarding the Orobic team the Cup with his hattrick

The rest, as they say, is history and has rightfully become a matter of legend.
