Gianluca Scamacca’s 2023-2024 season in stats

Let us therefore forge ahead with our special issue on Atalanta's "Four Horsemen of goalscoring", yearbook 2023/24: after our Teun Koopmeiners served the "amouse bouche" with plenty of  Hollandaise sauce by the side, it's time for Gianluca Scamacca to whet our appetites with the first course...

Landed in Bergamo back on August 8 from West Ham, the striker's maiden season as a black-and-blue was littered with thrills, spills and vindications, both personal and collective, by the score! And speaking of scoring, Gianluca surely hit the ground running with that brace against Monza in hist first Serie A start on MD3... Slowly but surely, Atalanta's number 90 imposed himself as the mainspring of the Nerazzurri's offensive clockwork thanks to both his goals of undisputed craftsmanship and foremost his selflessness and his eagerness to always put his qualities at the disposal of the team.

With the onset of 2024, Scamacca gave free rein to his goalscoring prowess and bagged 13 of his 19 overall nets between January 27 2024 (namely, the MD22 2-0 home win over Udinese) and May 26 2024 (when he opened the scoring in the 3-0 domestic triumph over Torino on MD38), with the brace scored at Anfield in the 1st leg of the UEFA Europa League quarterfinals as the non-negotiable zenith of our 90's streak, a spree that converted the Italian striker in the team's best scorer in both the Serie A and the UEL, where he surely left his indelible mark in the path to the final glory and of which he became the third-best seasonal scorer overall with his 6 goals in 11 games.

"Up to 90": the ins and outs of Scamacca's 2023/24

Here's a breakdown of the black-and-blue number striker's  2023/24 campaign:

GENERAL

• With 11 goals to his name in the last two seasons (2022/23 and 2023/24), Scamacca is leading Italian player for nets scored in European competitions (qualifying games included).

• The black-and-blue striker favoured 27 goals (19 goals and 8 assists) in all competitions this season;

• With 12 goals scored in all competitions since early March, Scamacca is the Serie A striker flaunting the best scoring figures during that time (followed by Pulisic with 7);

• Since the last International break in March, no other player in the whole Big-5 European Leagues has contributed to more goals than Gianluca Scamacca but Chelsea's striker Cole Palmer (both tied on 14);

• Having scored all his 19 seasonal goals as a starter (namely, 27 appearances in the starting XI in all competitions), Scamacca has averaged a tally of 0,7 goals scored per start.

SERIE A

• Scamacca made his official Atalanta debut on 20/08/2023, coming off from the bench in the 1-2 away win over Sassuolo (Serie A TIM MD1);

• In his first start, which also coincided with his debut at the Gewiss Stadium, Scamacca scored his first goals, namely a brace in the 3-0 win over Monza played on 02/09/2023, for Atalanta (Serie A TIM MD3);

• In addition to providing his first assist as  a black-and-blue, Scamacca repeated himself with another brace in the 3-0 win over Empoli  held on 30/10/2023 (Serie A TIM MD10);

• Scamacca made his 25th Atalanta appearance for Atalanta in the away 1-1 league draw against Milan played in San Siro on 25/02/2024 (Serie A TIM MD25);

• For the second time in his Serie A career, volta in Serie A in cui Scamacca ha fornito un assist e segnato almeno un gol nella stessa partita nel pareggio interno per 2-2 contro l'Hellas Verona del 15/04/2024 (32ª Serie A TIM);

• Segnando il gol dell' 1-2 nella vittoria in trasferta contro la Salernitana del 06/05/2024 (35ª Serie A TIM), Scamacca ha raggiunto la doppia cifra in campionato;

• Best Atalanta scorer in the 2023/24 Serie A with 12 goals (on par with Teun Koopmeiners) in 29 appearances (namely 17 starts and 12 coming on as a substitute) averaging 0,7 nets per start;

• Notching one goal every 122 minutes, Scamacca is the second-best Serie A scorer timing wise (only bested by Lautaro Martínez's average of 1 goal every 111 minutes);

• Thanks to his 12 goals and 6 assists in the 2023/24 season, not only is Scamacca the leading Italian player for most goals favoured in the Serie A, but he has also bested Cristiano Doni and Sergio Floccari’s previous records (both tied on 17 nets) from the 2007/08 and 2008/09 stints respectively, thus becoming the first Italian player to have favoured 18+ goals for Atalanta in a single Serie A campaign in the last 20 years (since the 2004/05 campaign);

COPPA ITALIA

• First game, first start and first win for Atalanta in the National Cup in the single-leg RO16 3-1 victory over Sassuolo of 03/01/2024;

• By scoring the temporary 2-1 goal and providing Lookman with the assist to make it 3-1 in the return semi-final game against Fiorentina held at the Gewiss Stadium on 24/04/2024, Scamacca made his scoring debut (and delivered his first key pass) in the Coppa Italia as an Atalanta player. The black-and-blue striker would close the campaign with one goal in 4 National Cup appearances.

UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE

• Scamacca made his official Atalanta debut in European competitions in the 2-1 away win over Sporting CP played on 05/10/2023 (Group Stage MD2);

• The 1-0 home win over Sturm Graz (Group Stage, MD4) played on 09/11/2023 marked Scamacca's first Nerazzurro start in European competitions whilst also being his first feature at the Gewiss Stadium in a continental tournament;

• With his opener in the 1-1 draw claimed on 30/11/2023 against Sporting CP (Group Stage, MD5), Scamacca made his scoring debut in a UEFA competition for Atalanta;

• By levelling the score in the 1-1 draw against Sporting CP in the RO16 reverse game played on 06/03/2024, Scamacca scored his first goal in a UEFA knockout stage (and his first away net as a black-and-blue in a European competition) as an Atalanta player;

• With his brace in the 0-3 away win over Liverpool in the reverse quarterfinals' game played at Anfield on 11/04/2024, not only did Scamacca bagged his first multiple scoring as an Atalanta player in UEFA competitions but he also became: the first player in the history of Atalanta to have scored in four back-to-back European appearance and the first Italian player to net a brace at Anfield in European competitions;

• Opening the scoring in the 1-1 away draw at the Orange Vélodrome stadium against Olympique Marseille on 02/05/2024 (UEL Semi-finals, 1st leg), Gianluca Scamacca became: the 4th-ever Italian player to have scored 5+ goals in a single Europa League campaign and the best Atalanta scorer in a single season of European football by surpassing Josip Ilicic’s record of 5 nets in the the 2019/20 Champions League;

• By assisting Lookman's 3-0 goal in the UEFA Europa League final, Scamacca registered his first-ever key-pass as an Atalanta player in UEFA Competitions;

• With 6 goals and 1 assist in 11 games (9 starts, 2 coming in as a substitute) Scamacca was Atalanta's best scorer in the 2023/24 UEFA Europa League (and third-best overall in the tournament this season) and averaged a net every 117 minutes.
